Life is a bowl of Cherries or is it a box of Chocolates?

Nevertheless, this is a serious existential question that you have probably asked yourself at some stage in your life?

This question goes to the heart of two issues:

  1. How you make sense of your life.
  2. What control do you have (or had) over the events that have shaped your life today?

The world seems to be in turmoil, again.  There are political, economic and social uncertainties everywhere.  Political movements and activism is rife.  Groups and individuals are exercising their freedom unencumbered and everything is shown on a loop 24/7 – the good, the bad and the ugly.  Almost every corner of the world is now accessible, live and in colour.

It is a great time in history to be a spectator but at the same time, given our proximity to “immediate” or instant news and information we don’t feel like spectators but more like participants who get “dragged” into events (consciously and/or subconsciously) that we never planned on “attending”.

Similarly, personal psychology (how we see and understand ourselves) plays a key role in helping us make sense of the trajectory our life has taken as does the question of whether you have been an active participant (through decisions you have made) or a spectator to your own life (life has just happened to you).

This understanding, rationalisation or “soul” searching of our “deservingness” truly shapes not just our future but also our present and the subsequent decisions you make today that will shape and guide your life.

Beautiful Life

Why is this an important question?   I would suggest that it is important to take stock and to reflect so we don’t repeat mistakes and patterns that jeopardise our future and the happiness of those we care for.

The key to a better understanding is wrestling and coming to some conclusion on the issue of locus of control.  That is, who or what is in control of your life?   Like a complex puzzle the resolution of which will bring everything together in one fell swoop (clarity) you need to come to a conclusion as to the locus of control of your life.

I raise this issue to make this simple point: Don’t stop living and acting purposefully. No matter how hard things may be or low you may feel.  Find a way.  You are not alone.

Find a purpose in something or in someone.  It doesn’t have to be world-changing or grand but a simple purpose, a simple intent; a simple gesture can be transformative. Start now and start within your immediate circle of influence.

For those of you who are satisfied with your life then I would encourage you to share that wisdom with others and perhaps beyond those who are just in your family circle.  Give back to the community.  There is someone out there who is seeking an answer to a question or a solution to a problem that you have overcome in a way that not many others have and they could really use your unique wisdom, guidance, encouragement and inspiration.

If you are struggling with your life and things are not going to plan then I encourage you to reach out to someone and share that burden.

Either way, don’t miss any opportunity to transform your own life and of those around you.  Start today. Start small.

And don’t forget to enjoy the chocolate covered cherries along the way!
